Bruxism (Grinding)
Many people have bruxism (grinding of the teeth) and may not even know they are doing it. Most often, they grind their teeth during sleep. Although stress is one possible cause, often the cause remains unknown.
Bruxism can sometimes cause severe damage if left untreated. Potential damage includes:
- Chipped enamel
- Worn-down teeth
- Loosened teeth
- Tooth fracture
- Gum problems
- Damage to existing dental work
(fillings, crowns, bridges, implants)
- Jaw muscle or joint problems
- Tooth Loss
Symptoms of grinding:
- Jaw soreness
- Sensitive teeth
- Loose teeth
- Earaches
- Dull headaches
- Neck aches
- Clicking sound upon opening the mouth
Depending on the situation, our doctors may recommend a mouth guard to be made. A mouth guard is a custom-fitted tray, worn at night to protect the teeth from grinding damage. A bite adjustment could also be recommended. This corrects the way the top and bottom teeth fit together and may reduce the chances of grinding. Other recommendations may include: reducing stress, medication to relieve muscle tension, and/or dental repairs to restore any damaged teeth.
At West 10th Dental Group, we evaluate for signs of bruxism during comprehensive evaluations. If at any time you think this may be a problem for you or a family member, do not hesitate to ask us!
