Diabetes and Your Oral Health
At West 10th Dental Group, we see many patients under treatment for type 2 or adult diabetes. We find many of our diabetic patients have not heard about the relationship of their diabetic condition and oral health. Today, however, it is becoming ever more clear that excellent oral health is terribly important for the diabetic patient!
Is there a correlation between diabetes and gum disease?
There is no doubt today, that the diabetic patient is more susceptible to the destructive effects of gum disease or periodontitis. In addition, the diabetic patient is fighting a double edged sword. The reduced resistance to infection often associated with diabetes makes gum disease a more devastating condition, and the infective process makes diabetic control much more difficult. Proper oral health now becomes an issue closely associated with total health!
What are some other oral conditions associated with diabetes?
Dry Mouth can sometimes affect those with diabetes. When inadequate amounts of saliva, the constant dryness can allow bacteria to colonize and also cause painful irritation to the soft tissues of the mouth. We can recommend products to help this condition, and avoiding excessive consumption of caffeine and alcohol can also help.
Oral candidiasis is a fungal infection more prevalent in those with diabetes and denture patients. Oral candidiasis greatly increases the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Good oral care at home is essential, and we can prescribe medications to treat the infection.
Lichen planus is a skin disorder that produces lesions inside the mouth. If Lichen planus becomes severe, painful ulcers can erupt and erode surface tissue. We may prescribe a medication to help relieve the symptoms of this condition if needed.
