Bad Breath (Halitosis)
Bad breath, Halitosis, can be caused by four primary factors. If you feel or have been told that you suffer from bad breath, please feel free to discuss your concerns with the oral hygiene staff at West 10th Dental Group!
Dental conditions are in fact a major contributor to bad breath. Dental disease, both dental decay and periodontal disease (gum disease) will cause bad breath. Excellent dental health is essential to prevent breath odor. In addition, proper oral hygiene will certainly help prevent bad breath. Proper techniques in brushing, flossing, and especially tongue cleaning will control bacterial causes of halitosis. Mouth washes with antibacterial components or oxygenizing agents will also help.
Certain medications, especially those causing dry mouth, will make patients more prone to bad breath. Special care in oral hygiene along with products formulated for dry mouth sufferers are helpful in these patients.
The remaining three common causes of bad breath are not directly related to your oral hygiene. They are sinus problems, digestive problems -including diet, and general medical conditions which exhibit symptoms noticed in the breath. If your dental professionals at West 10th Dental Group cannot diagnosis a possible cause for halitosis, then it is likely that your medical professional may be able to help.
