TMD/TMJ (Temporomandibular Disorders)
The temporomandibular joints (TMJ) are the two joints on either side of the head which form the connection between the upper and lower jaw. This joint is one of the more complicated joints in the body, as the joint allows for wide range of movement in many different planes.
The components of the TMJ consist of muscles, ligaments, cartilaginous discs, and bones. Problems in any one of these parts can cause symptoms which are referred to as temporomandibular disorder (TMD) or a TMJ problem. Common symptoms include limited range of motion, pain with jaw opening, popping or clicking of the jaw, and pain in the muscles of the jaw.
At West 10th Dental Group, we screen for symptoms associated with TMD. If you exhibit symptoms of TMD, we will help to identify the source of the pain and determine a route of treatment or refer you to a TMJ specialist for proper treatment.
